Way back in early 2021, I got an invite to appear as a seance expert in a “documentary” called Demon in the White House. If you wonder why I’ve put the word “documentary” inside quotation marks…well, it’s because I realized a few phone calls in that these guys were as interested in speculation as fact.
Sure, I talked about the Fox Sisters, and the terrible tragedy of the Pierces (see below), and the later seances held by Mrs. Lincoln after her own loss, but the people behind this show wanted me to reinforce their very creative notion that Franklin and Jane Pierce had brought a demon into the White House, which had taken up residence there.
I probably don’t have to tell you that I’m not among the 45% of Americans who say they believe in demons. When I tried to reiterate this, especially during the on-camera interview, I got back lots of, “But what if demons DID exist? You also write fiction, right?”
